Fire safety in the Brussels metro system

In the coming years, a number of lines in the Brussels metro system will be made fully automatic. The aim is to double the metro train frequency. As part of this operation, the fire safety measures and systems in the metro stations need to be reviewed. The Ministry of the Brussels-Capital Region has awarded the framework contract for this project to Witteveen+Bos Belgium N.V. This project will be carried out together with our SEEN partner NIRAS. The work will consist of assessing the existing safety measures and systems at a large number of stations (thirty in principle). In addition, real-time evacuation analyses will be performed and fire scenarios will be modelled using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a branch of fluid dynamics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyse problems that involve fluid flows.
