The expertise group Safety and Fire Safety is expert in fire safety design and apply a design and construction process which considers hazards, risks, and precautions to achieve a balanced and acceptable level of safety. We develop integrated fire safety strategies to provide buildings with a high fire safety level while achieving architectural aspirations and delivering value. The group has more than ten years of experience in developing fire strategies that provide alternative solutions where the prescriptive fire safety guidance is limiting to the aesthetics, spatial planning or cost of a project. Drawing on the versatile experiences from the group members, we take a holistic approach to safety, looking at the often conflicting needs of fire safety and building security as one package. The group has extensive experience on both the design level as well as client advisor on the management level. This has provided us with a unique understanding of the importance of business continuity in the daily operation of a building or transport system and the value of a risk free approval process during design and construction.

An example is the collaboration between Witteveen+Bos in the Netherlands and NIRAS in Denmark in the design of the emergency ventilation system for a new railway station and tunnel in the Dutch town of Delft. The nature of railway station design requires that fire engineers work to maintain and utilise circulation routes, while accommodating retail and achieving a high level of security. A large proportion of our rail and tunnel work to date has been undertaken in collaboration between Witteveen+Bos in the Netherlands and NIRAS in Denmark. Witteveen+Bos’ general infrastructure safety knowledge coupled with NIRAS’ fire safety engineering capabilities has established a strong and successful group.
